Benefits of Precision Machining with CNC

The cost of CNC precision machining may be higher than traditional machining methods. However, the benefits offered by the process definitely make it worth the extra investment in the long run, so what are the benefits of CNC precision machining?

1. Tight tolerances

Tight tolerances are the number one reason to use CNC precision machining. Someone may ask: what is the tolerance?

Tolerance, that is, error, what we make may not be exactly the same as the envisioned size, there may be errors, but as long as it is still within the acceptable range, then this thing is still usable. The tolerance is also known as dimensional accuracy. It refers to the slight deviation in the size of the machined part from its CAD blueprint. CNC precision machining uses specialized processes and cutting tools to reduce tolerances to the smallest possible values. This makes the parts more accurate than the original blueprint.

Precision machining is commonly performed with four different types of machining tolerances:

Unidirectional Tolerance: In this type of tolerance, a dimensional change in a single direction is allowed. Tolerance limits can be higher or lower than expected dimensions.

Bilateral Tolerance: In this type of tolerance, dimensional changes are allowed in both directions. Tolerance limits above or below expected dimensions are acceptable.

Composite Tolerance: A composite tolerance is the final tolerance calculated by adding or subtracting the tolerances of the different dimensions that make up the part.

Constrain Dimensions: Define upper and lower dimensions instead of defining the desired dimension size. For example, the preset size may be in the range of 20mm to 22mm.

2. High accuracy

Tight tolerances are a direct indication that precision machining will result in high precision in the final product. Precision machining is generally performed on parts that need to cooperate with other parts. Therefore, high precision is crucial for these specific parts to work flawlessly in post.

3. High repeatability

The concept of repeatability is one of the important cornerstones of modern manufacturing. Every part manufactured through a process looks like every other part to the end user. Any deviation from this reproduction is generally considered a defect. Precision machining is attractive in this regard. Using high-precision CNC machining, it is possible to make each part exactly the same as the original, and the deviation is so small that it can be ignored.

4. Low production cost

Since there is no deviation in precision machining, fewer defective products are produced. Therefore, the process can greatly reduce the rejection rate of parts. Therefore, the material cost is lower. Additionally, automated computer-aided manufacturing processes can reduce labor costs. The combined reduction in labor and material costs means that CNC machining is less expensive to produce than any alternative.

5. Speed and efficiency

Precision machining involves high-speed robotics that can make parts faster than manual fabrication on traditional lathes. Additionally, these parts feature high-precision and close-tolerance finishing, so no secondary machining is required. This reduces production time and increases productivity and efficiency on the shop floor.

6. Complicated processing capability

CNC machine tools can perform complex machining operations such as 3D surface milling, helical cutting, and multi-axis simultaneous machining. They can accurately control the movement of tools and workpieces according to pre-written programs, enabling the machining of complex shapes and structures.

7. Security

CNC machine tools replace human labor with a computerized numerical control system and eliminate the risk factor of human error involved in the cutting process, greatly reducing the potential hazards workers face when using the machine tool. Workers have also been able to move into skill-intensive jobs, such as CNC design operations.

8. Reduce human error

Since the operation of the CNC machine tool is controlled by the computer, the influence of human factors on the processing quality is reduced. Human errors, such as fatigue, inconsistent operation and judgment, often lead to poor processing results. Using a CNC machine can reduce these errors and improve the consistency and accuracy of machining.
